Wellness Center Celebration: Inspiring Healthy Living for Cancer Survivors
6/18/2009 2:25:36 PM

It’s been years since I had to wake up before dawn to go to work, but on Friday, crawling out of bed at 3am never felt so good!

Our Wellness Center Celebration got started bright and early with one of the most enthusiastic guys that I know --- Tom Voinche of Good Morning Acadiana. Tom knows what it’s like to watch someone you love fight cancer and he knows how important it is to have a place to turn to for emotional support, resources and programs.

I also know that the way to Tom’s heart is through his stomach, so I made sure he was well fed Friday morning. He made sure that his viewers learned about our new Wellness Center and what it means to families fighting cancer in Acadiana. We can’t thank him enough for his commitment to our community and to families fighting cancer!

He met his match that morning with one of our regulars ---- my Dad would call her a chatty Kathy (as he calls me too!) --- Patricia Hebard laughed her way through the show. Patricia and many of our cancer survivors went above and beyond and showed up at 5am to help us highlight what’s happening at Miles Perret.

Thank you for caring about us as much as we love you!

As my friend and cancer survivor Sherry McMinn told me, “I don’t have to work out til the end of next week. You’ve got me going for two hours straight!”

Sherry was back on that exercise bike just in time for Channel 10’s arrival at our new Wellness Center! Meet Your Neighbor was next and my new crew of cancer survivors (plus Sherry) biked and walked their way through another news show.  KLFY-TV continued its’ coverage into the evening and late night and we’re so grateful for the support!

In between our TV spots, one of our survivors, Susan Karam joined me at KPEL for two interviews. Steve Pelloquin does sports radio. He has such a big heart and he is so giving of his time for Miles Perret Cancer Services.

Steve lost his brother to cancer and he is passionate about making sure other families in Acadiana know that there is a place to turn for help.

On the KPEL news side, Bernadette Lee, Bernie to her fans, was so compassionate during her interview with Susan.

I get choked up listening to our survivors talk about what MPCS means to them. They’ve been to such dark places and it feels so good to be a light in their life.

Ten hours later …. and the big event is still ahead of us. Our Wellness Center Celebration continued with an Open House Friday evening. We invited clients and donors to share in this special event.

After the invitations went out, the buzz was about the healthy hors d’oeuvres from the Holistic Chef at City Club. Betsey Mitchell is inspiring in her use of organic foods and how she turns them into delectable treats! Betsey and Louisiana Oncology’s dietitian, Valerie Miniex are teaming up to help Miles Perret create Cancer and Nutrition Cooking Classes. Nutrition is an important part of our wellness program and it was wonderful to highlight their passion to help families fighting cancer at our Open House!

A grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana made it possible for us to create a new Wellness Center and significantly expand our program. It is already paying off.

Since opening, we have about two new clients every day who come to us for wellness.

Tom Voinche asked me to tell his viewers about Miles ---- the 8-year-old whose memory lives on in the work we do.

I told him, “Miles is still working his magic”. Is he ever!

There’s a photo of Miles up at the school that he attended. Our Wellness Center looks so good because he is smiling down on us.

Jacques Breaux saw that picture at Ascension Day School and started asking his parents about the little boy.

“He wanted to know how someone so young could die,” Tim Breaux told me recently.

It got the family talking and they decided to do something special for the organization created in memory of Miles. Tim is a contractor and owns Iron Horse Development. His wife Monique owns Posh Exclusive Interiors. They worked their magic and helped turn an old bank into our Wellness Center right downstairs from our Center at 2130 Kaliste Saloom Road.

We’d also like to thank some special businesses that went above and beyond for Miles Perret Cancer Services’ New Wellness Center:
